Antarctica has about the same land area as South America. It has the coldest year-round climate, and some of the most arid lands on earth. Much of Antarctica would be considered desert if temperatures were not so low. Antarctica has more unexplored land area than the rest of the earth combined.
Antarctica has been set aside by international treaty for scientific exploration. Although several nations claim parts of the Antarctic continent, there is no formal recognition of any of these claims. The United States maintains four permanent research stations on the continent, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, Argentina, and several other countries maintain either permanent or seasonal bases as well. The largest community on the continent is at McMurdo Naval Air Station, which is located on the coast of the Ross Sea.
This program is an April Fools joke, and as such it takes a frivolous look at Antarctica. We are aware that much scientific research and exploration is being done on the continent, and we do not mean to disparage the land, the sea or the fine people who have dedicated years of their life to working in a hostile environment for the advancement of human knowledge.
